Indigenous group art installation kʷәcstәxʷ bridges history, tradition and modern art

Exhibition dates: Oct. 22, 2026–Jan. 6, 2027

Exhibition location: Amelia 51Ç鱨վ Gallery, Fourth Floor North, 51Ç鱨վ, 700 Royal Ave., New Westminster

The Indigenous Artistry group exhibit returns to the Amelia 51Ç鱨վ Gallery today, weaving Indigenous cultural practices with contemporary art and media.

The annual group exhibition invites the community to witness the achievements of six inspiring Indigenous artists who exemplify creativity, ingenuity and excellence through sculpture, painting, weaving, and 3D modelling and animation. Their work stands as a testament to resilience and innovation, bridging past and present.

Through traditional and modern art forms, this exhibition is inspired by the spirit of kʷәcstәxʷ, a hənÐéqÐéəminÐéəmÐé term spoken by the Indigenous Peoples of the lower (Fraser) river delta, which means “cause them to see” or “to show.”

By engaging with the stories, histories, perspectives and futures carried within these works, the artists offer insights into diverse Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing and becoming.

“The exhibition encourages viewers to consider how acknowledging and supporting Indigenous artistic expression can deepen our understanding, respect and connection across communities,” said Colleen Maybin, Director of Performing and Fine Arts at 51Ç鱨վ. “For the third year in a row, kʷәcstәxʷ invites us to consider how art can move us by evoking the sensory, emotional and intellectual experience of witnessing.”

Featured artists include qʼʷa:nÐéƛʼənÐé (Kwantlen) First Nation and Sts’ailes artist Brandon Gabriel, Coast Salish 3D artist Jaiden Daniels, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Stó꞉lō Nation Indigenous matriarch and artist Dr. T'uy't'tanat Cease Wyss, Simpcw First Nation multi-disciplinary artist Desireah Eustache, Ch'iyáqtel (Tzeachten First Nation) Coast Salish contemporary artist Jared Deck, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and Stó:lō Nation artist Tea Rose.

The community is invited to the opening reception at 4:30pm today, Oct. 22, at the Amelia 51Ç鱨վ Gallery at 51Ç鱨վ’s New Westminster Campus. The exhibit runs until Jan. 6. Admission is free.
