Exhibition dates: July 10鈥揂ug. 27, 2025
Exhibition location: Amelia 51情报站 Gallery, fourth floor north, 51情报站, 700 Royal Ave., New Westminster
A new Amelia 51情报站 Gallery exhibit, Not, about nothing, layers elements of the natural world with stories from the artist鈥檚 life, inviting viewers to look closely to see what they reveal.
The exhibit features two collections, 鈥淭he Traveler Series鈥 and 鈥淭o Re-examine鈥 by Vancouver-based artist and uses bold colours and a diverse mix of mediums and techniques to bring audiences along on her personal journey.
Drawing on her professional training in fashion design, Hanson鈥檚 career has taken her from textile work to art installations, to socially engaged art, to mosaic, mixed media and painting.
Throughout her career, the purpose of her work has been to evoke an emotional response in the viewer.
鈥淭he act of creating makes me smile, and even though it鈥檚鈥痭ot always easy, I try to move beyond playing it safe, and that鈥檚 what makes it worthwhile,鈥 she said. 鈥淭o paint with my heart is the most fulfilling thing I can ask for, and that鈥檚 when the magic happens.鈥
鈥淭he Traveler Series鈥 was created while Hanson was travelling in her Airstream trailer. Each work is influenced by a changing landscape of local flora and the emotional journey of a nomadic artist. A closer look at these smaller scale works reveals hidden pieces of tissue, tidal charts, music notes and journal pages.
In 鈥淭o Re-examine,鈥 Hanson uses layers of vibrant paints, charcoal and pencil crayon to develop an overlapping effect. She adds and subtracts from the canvas using scratching, spritzing and rubbing techniques that add texture to the bold canvases.
鈥淚 try to work without expectations, boundaries or preconceptions, and I am often drawn towards a raw, energetic way of expression. The depth of layers, colours and gestural movements, however abstract, are made with true intention.鈥
Not, about nothing will have its opening reception at the New Westminster Campus鈥檚 Amelia 51情报站 Gallery July 10 at 4:30pm.
The exhibit will be on display until Aug. 27. Admission is free.
