Learning activities

Skills will be taught and practiced in-person using live animals, models and cadavers. Some labs will be off-site.

Course description
In this course, students practice and are evaluated on small mammal and avian practical skills. Topics include restraint, physical examination, husbandry, blood collection and medication administration. Off-site labs are required. These labs may take place outside of scheduled class hours.
Course content

Rodents and rabbits:

  • restraint and identification methods
  • sexing
  • parenteral medication administration
  • oral dosing

Avians:

  • restraint
  • physical examination & record keeping
  • nail, beak and wing trimming 

Post mortem skills:

  • dissection
  • sample collection
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • safely and competently perform small mammal and avian essential skills as designated by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association;
  • safely restrain rodents, rabbits and avians using fear-free techniques;
  • perform an avian physical examination
  • accurately sex rodents and rabbits;
  • perform basic care procedures for rodents and rabbits, including nail trims;
  • adminster drugs parenterally to rodents and rabbits;
  • perform common avian procedures such as beak, wing and nail trims;
  • perform a post-mortem style dissection and collect representative samples for laboratory analysis.
Means of assessment

Assessment will be in accordance with the 51Ç鱨վ Evaluation Policy. The instructor will present a written course outline listing the specific essential skills to be evaluated and the evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester. 

In order to achieve a grade of C (or higher) in the course, students must:

  • demonstrate competency (a performance of 60% or higher) in an evaluation of each of the assigned essential skills
  • attend a minimum of 80% of the scheduled hours in lab

Evaluation will be based on:

Practical evaluations: 60-90% (no single evaluation worth more than 20%)

Attendance and participation: 10-40%

Total: 100%

Prerequisites

VTEC 2404

Students in the Veterinary Technology program are required to maintain a minimum grade of C in all courses in order to progress in the program.
