Overview

Course description
In this course students take part in three separate one-week practicums. These practicums will take place in a small animal specialist or emergency hospital, a specialty ruminant, equine or farm animal focused hospital, a wildlife or research facility, a laboratory facility, or other specialty practice.

Learning activities

Students will take part in a variety of veterinary facility work experiences.

Methods of evaluation may include written assignments, clinic evaluations, practical (essential skills) evaluations, case studies and online blog or discussion board posts.

Means of assessment

Assessment will be in accordance with the 51Ç鱨վ Evaluation Policy. The instructor will present a written course outline with specific evaluation criteria at the beginning of the semester.

This course will use a Mastery-based assessment. Students will receive a Mastery ("MAS") grade based on attendance of a minimum of 70 practicum hours, submission of all practicum assignments and satisfactory evaluations of applicable VTEC skills competencies.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate professional work behaviours such as punctuality, effective communication and a strong work ethic;
  • follow standard operating procedures;
  • apply required health and safety protocols to the workplace;
  • safely perform procedures such as patient restraint and physical examinations;
  • administer medications according to veterinarian instructions;
  • perform husbandry and nursing procedures such as cleaning animal housing, grooming, feeding, bandaging and patient monitoring, in different species;
  • describe the variety of career pathways available to graduate veterinary technologists.

Prerequisites

VTEC 2107 and VTEC 2108 and VTEC 2109

Students in the Veterinary Technology program are required to maintain a minimum grade of C in all courses in order to progress in the program.

Corequisites

Courses listed here must be completed either prior to or simultaneously with this course:

(VTEC 2307 or VTEC 2317) and (VTEC 2313 or VTEC 2403)
